Macron urges EU to ease fuel standards to boost production
French President Emmanuel Macron has formally requested the European Commission to implement emergency measures to combat rising fuel prices and supply shortages across Europe. In a letter to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Macron proposed a temporary relaxation of technical standards for diesel and kerosene, including specifications for density, volatility, and desulfurization. French refineries estimate these adjustments could increase fuel production by 5% to 20%.

In France, the crisis has manifested in rising costs and localized shortages, with reports indicating that approximately 14% to 15% of filling stations faced supply issues in late September 2026. The French government has also announced relief measures, including financial aid for frequent drivers and energy checks for low-income households, to mitigate the economic impact on citizens.
