France: President Macron warns of high-risk protests

French President Emmanuel Macron has warned that upcoming demonstrations, specifically those scheduled for Saturday, October 31, represent a high risk to public security. During a visit to Marseille to survey damage from previous unrest, Macron admitted that authorities did not anticipate the scale of the violence on October 17, noting that police presence was inadequate to manage the mobilization of far-left activists.

Macron criticized social media platforms for their role in polarizing the population and facilitating the coordination of violent acts, looting, and attacks. To protect urban centers and businesses, the government plans to keep protest routes outside of city centers. While a state of emergency has not been declared, Macron stated it remains an option if the situation worsens.

In response to student demands regarding educational resources and the Parcoursup admissions platform, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu is expected to announce concrete measures. This follows weeks of nationwide unrest involving students, unions, and the ‘yellow vests’ movement, driven by concerns over the rising cost of living and public services.
