Tanzania Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi resigns and is expelled from ruling party
Tanzania’s Vice President Emmanuel Nchimbi has resigned from office, effective September 4, after serving approximately ten months. Nchimbi stated his decision was made to honor a previous commitment to President Samia Suluhu Hassan, noting he was “convinced beyond doubt” that the President desired a change in leadership.
Following his resignation, the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party expelled Nchimbi from its membership, citing violations of party discipline and ethics. The party has nominated Energy Minister Deogratius Ndejembi to succeed him, a move that now awaits parliamentary approval.
The political shift follows a period of tension stemming from the October 2025 election, which was marked by widespread unrest and a deadly crackdown on protesters. An official inquiry into the post-election violence reported at least 518 deaths. Nchimbi’s departure and subsequent expulsion have been interpreted by analysts as a sign of deep political fractures within the administration and the ruling party.
