Emmanuel Finnih sentenced to 78 months for student aid fraud

Emmanuel Olugbaike Finnih, a 43-year-old former adjunct professor at Texas Southern University, has been sentenced to 78 months in federal prison for orchestrating a massive student financial aid fraud scheme.

Operating for approximately five years, Finnih submitted more than 100 fraudulent financial aid applications to the U.S. Department of Education. He utilized the identities of “straw students” at various Texas colleges and universities, using stolen personal information to sign master promissory notes and applications. To maintain control, he managed the mailing addresses, telephone numbers, and email accounts used for official communications.

The scheme sought over $1.3 million in grants and loans, resulting in the disbursement of approximately $921,189. The fraud caused significant harm to victims, some of whom were left with tens of thousands of dollars in fraudulent student loan debt that damaged their credit and ability to enroll in legitimate educational institutions. Following his prison term, Finnih is ordered to serve three years of supervised release.
