Emmanuel Ugboaja, NLC General Secretary, dies at 60

Emmanuel Ugboaja, the General Secretary of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), has died at the age of 60 following a prolonged battle with leukaemia. NLC President Joe Ajaero announced the news to the National Executive Council during a meeting in Enugu.

A veteran trade unionist and lawyer, Ugboaja had served as the NLC General Secretary since August 2019. He was noted for his significant role in negotiating the national minimum wage and managing industrial relations between the government, employers, and organized labour. His career included leadership roles in the National Union of Chemical, Footwear, Rubber, Leather and Non-Metallic Products Employees and involvement in national constitutional reform conferences in 2005 and 2014.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Labour Party, and various industrial organizations have expressed condolences, describing him as a dedicated advocate for workers' rights and a key figure in Nigeria's democratic and labour movements.
