Emmanuel Wanyonyi Breaks 1000m World Record in Monaco, Misses London Diamond League Podium
At the Herculis meeting in Monaco on 10 July, Kenyan middle‑distance star Emmanuel Wanyonyi set a new men’s 1000‑metre world record, running 2:11.83 and eclipsing the 1999 mark of 2:11.96 held by Noah Ngeny. All eight finishers recorded personal bests, with several national records also falling.
A week later, at the London Diamond League on 18 July, Wanyonyi finished fourth in the men’s 800 m in 1:43.30, missing the podium as American Brandon Miller won in 1:42.19. The result followed a strong start to the 2026 season for the Olympic champion, which included a 1500 m victory at the Kip Keino Classic and other podium finishes on the circuit.
