Emmett Till anniversary marks ongoing fight against systemic injustice

The anniversary of the 1955 kidnapping and murder of 14-year-old Emmett Till is being marked in Mississippi. Till was abducted from his great-uncle's home following accusations by Carolyn Bryant, tortured, and killed. His body was discovered in the Tallahatchie River after being weighted down with a cotton-gin fan. Despite compelling evidence, his killers, Roy Bryant and J.W. Milam, were acquitted by an all-white jury.

As the 71st anniversary commemorations begin, activists and family members highlight the ongoing struggle against systemic injustice and racial violence. Priscilla Williams-Till, founder of the Emmett Till Justice for Families Foundation and Till’s cousin, noted that the legacy of white supremacy continues to influence modern social climates. The commemoration serves as a reminder of the historical brutality that forced the nation to confront racism, particularly through the widely published images of Till’s open-casket funeral.
