Emmy Awards begin with early ceremonies in Los Angeles

The 78th Emmy Awards have commenced with the first two nights of ceremonies held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. Formerly known as the Creative Arts Emmys, these sessions distribute over 100 primetime awards, primarily focusing on behind-the-scenes crew, unscripted programming, documentaries, and variety specials.

Top nominees include the HBO Max medical drama ‘The Pitt’, which leads with 25 nominations, and the comedy series ‘Hacks’, which holds a record-tying 24 nominations. Other notable contenders include ‘Pluribus’ and ‘Widow’s Bay’. The Television Academy has also moved several high-profile categories, such as best supporting actor and actress in a limited series, from the main telecast to these early ceremonies.

Early winners and notable moments include ‘Antiques Roadshow’ securing its first Emmy after 22 attempts, and Bad Bunny winning his first Emmy for his Super Bowl halftime show. In the late-night category, ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’ secured an upset victory in writing, ending a decade-long winning streak by ‘Last Week Tonight with John Oliver’. The main primetime telecast is scheduled for September 14, hosted by Mariska Hargitay.
