Emotional intelligence impacts communication and conflict resolution

Emotional intelligence (EQ) is a learned skill that significantly impacts interpersonal communication and conflict resolution. Indicators of low EQ often manifest during arguments or routine daily interactions.

Common behaviors associated with low EQ include bringing up irrelevant past mistakes to win arguments, raising one's voice, or constantly interrupting others to dominate a conversation. Such actions often reflect an inability to control emotions rather than the strength of an argument. Additionally, interrupting others because one assumes they already understand the topic can make interlocutors feel undervalued.

Conversely, individuals with high EQ, such as those studied by Dr. Jenny Woo, foster trust and connection through specific communication habits. These include asking open-ended questions that evoke deep emotions and thoughts, as well as mirroring the tone and body language of others to create a sense of being heard and understood.
