Istanbul jewelry employee steals millions, replaces cash with kitchenware
An employee at Linavista Sarrafiye, a jewelry and exchange business near Istanbul's Grand Bazaar, stole approximately 699,366 USD, 430,758 Turkish Lira, and 806 Euros. The suspect, Emre C., had worked at the establishment for eight years.
To delay discovery of the theft, Emre C. reportedly filled the steel safe with kitchen items, including pots, pans, and water bottles, before locking it. He then informed his spouse that the company was sending him on an urgent trip to China and flew from Istanbul Airport later that night.
The investigation revealed that the suspects used fake Instagram accounts and the online game ‘Mobile Legends’ to coordinate money transfers and messages. Authorities have identified a network involving relatives and associates, including Berkay T., who was found with 130,000 USD in a vehicle. Emre C. has since been detained and claimed he was a secret partner of the company, asserting the funds were owed to him.
