Employee wellness programs face engagement hurdles due to work pressure
Companies are increasingly investing in employee wellness programs, offering benefits such as subsidized fitness, healthy office snacks, ergonomic equipment, and bicycle storage. However, these initiatives face significant engagement challenges.
Data suggests that wellness benefits often attract employees who are already physically active, while those facing the highest burdens—such as long commutes or physical discomfort—frequently remain uninvolved. Kinesiologist Domen Zupan notes that individuals suffering from back pain after an eight-hour workday are less likely to utilize subsidized gym memberships due to exhaustion and time constraints.
A survey by Pluxee highlights that rising work pressure and a lack of recovery time are major barriers to healthy lifestyles. Approximately 58% of employees report increased pressure to perform, while 39% cite fatigue and mental strain as primary obstacles to health. Other significant barriers include a lack of time (36%) and high workloads (35%), suggesting that employee health is often hindered by practical constraints rather than a lack of willpower.
