Employment notice period regulations in the UK, Australia, Canada, and UAE
Employment notice periods vary significantly across different jurisdictions, governed by specific national laws and individual contracts.
In the United Kingdom, statutory notice for employees who have worked at least one month begins at one week, increasing up to 12 weeks for those with 12 or more years of service. In Australia, the National Employment Standards provide for one week of notice up to one year of service, increasing to four weeks after five years, with an additional week for employees over 45 who have at least two years of continuous service. In Ontario, Canada, notice requirements range from one week after three months of service up to eight weeks for those with eight or more years of service.
In the United Arab Emirates, under Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, notice periods for private-sector employment must be a minimum of 30 calendar days and a maximum of 90 calendar days. The same period applies to both employers and employees unless a different arrangement is made that benefits the worker. During the notice period, the employment contract remains valid, and employees are entitled to their full salary unless both parties mutually agree to waive or shorten the period.
