Tuscany storms cause flooding in Empoli and Uffizi Gallery infiltration

Severe storms and heavy rainfall across Tuscany have caused significant disruption, including flooding in Empoli and water infiltration at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. In Empoli, rainfall reached up to 75 mm in one hour, flooding the historic center, garages, and shops, and causing electrical short circuits. Local authorities and firefighters responded to numerous calls to rescue motorists trapped in flooded underpasses.

At the Uffizi Gallery, a heavy downpour caused water to leak through a skylight in a room housing seven 17th-century paintings. The water splashed against the external protective glass of Caravaggio’s ‘Bacchus,’ but museum officials confirmed that the masterpiece and other artworks remained undamaged. The affected room was temporarily closed for inspection but has since reopened to the public.

The Civil Protection agency has issued a yellow alert for several Italian regions, including Tuscany, Lazio, Lombardy, and Marche, due to the risk of further intense thunderstorms and hydrogeological instability.
