Empresa Portuaria Iquique evaluates Punta Ballena for logistics expansion

Empresa Portuaria Iquique (EPI) is evaluating the Punta Ballena sector as a potential site for new port and logistics infrastructure to bolster the Tarapacá region. General Manager Rubén Castro and his executive team recently conducted a field inspection of the area located along Route A-514.

Castro noted that the site possesses favorable conditions for development, including an existing layout used for mining and guano activities that could be upgraded to an optimal operational level. This expansion could provide a new logistical access point north of Iquique, potentially reducing heavy truck traffic congestion within the city.

The initiative aims to address projected increases in cargo demand driven by mining, foreign trade, and bioceanic corridors. This prospecting effort is part of a broader strategy to develop a Regional Logistics Policy for Tarapacá, focusing on port access, logistics centers, and international corridors to enhance regional competitiveness.
