Alicante Airport to expand terminal as Costa Daurada leaders seek flood prevention

The Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport is set to undergo significant expansion. While the Ministry of Transport has ruled out the construction of a second runway due to current conditions, Aena has awarded a 15.6 million euro contract to design terminal improvements. The project aims to increase capacity to 26 million passengers annually by expanding the terminal surface by approximately 30% and adding new boarding bridges to facilitate non-Schengen flights.

Separately, in the Costa Daurada region, local leaders are addressing the aftermath of severe flooding. The mayors of Roda de Berà and El Vendrell have called for structural reforms to railway infrastructure. They argue that the train tracks act as barriers that prevent floodwaters from draining into the sea, describing the situation as a need for Adif to make the railway line more permeable to prevent future incidents.
