Emrie Brown: The non-linear path to becoming RMB CEO

Emrie Brown, the first female CEO of Rand Merchant Bank (RMB), describes her professional trajectory as a “jungle gym” rather than a traditional career ladder. Her path has been defined by diverse roles, unexpected shifts, and significant personal decisions.

Brown began her career as a chartered accountant, working at KPMG and Nedbank before joining RMB in 2001. Over two decades at the institution, she held several leadership positions, including Head of Acquisition and Leveraged Finance—becoming the first woman at the bank to lead a profit centre—and Head of the Banking Division. She was ultimately appointed CEO in October 2022.
