Emscher-Weg infrastructure project begins in Gelsenkirchen and Herne

The Emschergenossenschaft is beginning asphalt work on sections of the Emscher-Weg to improve riding comfort. Starting in late September, construction will take place in the cities of Gelsenkirchen and Herne, specifically between the junction of the Schellenbruchgraben and the junction of the Holzbach.

As part of a larger 3.6 million euro investment in local mobility infrastructure, the project is expected to be completed by mid-November 2026. The process involves removing the top layer of the existing path, compacting it with recycled material, and applying asphalt layers. A specialized light moraine gravel mixture will be rolled into the final bitumen layer to prevent the asphalt from overheating during summer months.

During the construction period, affected sections will be closed and diverted. The Emschergenossenschaft has issued safety warnings prohibiting unauthorized entry into the construction zones. Signage along the Emscher-Weg will also be updated as part of the project.
