Emssanar health service protest in Pasto

National watchdog Óscar Acosta staged a protest in Pasto, Colombia, by sewing his mouth shut and setting up makeshift shelters in front of the Emssanar headquarters. The demonstration aims to draw national attention to alleged deficiencies in health services provided by the EPS.

Acosta cited critical shortages in the delivery of medications, oxygen, and diapers, as well as difficulties in contracting healthcare providers. He specifically noted challenges for patients requiring specialized treatments, including oncology services in the Nariño department. Acosta stated that the poor quality of service is resulting in deaths.

In April, the Hospital Universitario Departamental de Nariño had suspended scheduled services for Emssanar users following the termination of a contract, though emergency services remained active. While other providers have since reached agreements to gradually resume care, the protest highlights ongoing concerns regarding healthcare access and administration.
