EMT Madrid Wins Merca2 ‘Impacto Global’ Award for Sustainable Transport

The Empresa Municipal de Transportes (EMT) of Madrid received the Merca2 ‘Impacto Global’ prize, presented by Juan Bravo, Vice‑Secretary of Treasury, Housing and Infrastructure, and collected by EMT CEO Alfonso Sánchez Vicente. The award recognises EMT’s transition to a fully sustainable fleet, including electric buses, compressed natural‑gas vehicles and pioneering green‑hydrogen fuel‑cell buses, alongside investments in smart charging infrastructure.

EMT also highlighted its digital transformation: contactless payment systems, AI‑driven route planning apps, real‑time passenger information displays and big‑data analytics to optimise frequencies and design dedicated bus lanes. The public‑sector operator positions itself as a laboratory for intelligent, accessible, low‑emission urban mobility.

The accolade underscores Madrid’s commitment to reducing traffic congestion and urban air pollution while showcasing a model that other cities may emulate.
