Emulation developments: GTA V browser port shut down and Xbox emulation arrives on PS5
The emulation community has seen two significant developments involving major gaming platforms. First, an unofficial project attempted to bring Grand Theft Auto V to web browsers via the site playgta5.com. Utilizing WebAssembly and leaked source code from 2022, the port allowed users to run a compressed version of the game through a browser tab. However, the site was taken down within six hours following a DMCA claim by Take-Two Interactive, the parent company of Rockstar Games.
In a separate development, a community developer known as u/Yzenx has successfully ported the Xemu emulator to jailbroken PlayStation 5 consoles. The project, titled XPSemu, uses QEMU's TCG JIT technology to translate original Xbox CPU instructions to the PS5 architecture, while utilizing the Vulkan API for graphics. While titles like Halo 2 and Crash Bandicoot have shown playable performance, other games like Forza Motorsport have experienced performance drops due to CPU bottlenecks.
