EN 222 road section reopens in São João da Pesqueira
The section of the EN 222 national road between Ponte das Bateiras and São João da Pesqueira is reopening to traffic on Wednesday afternoon. Although Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) had previously estimated the closure would last until September 4, the reopening has been moved forward to 7:00 PM today, albeit with alternating traffic flow.
The rehabilitation project, located on the south bank of the Douro River, involves a 17-kilometer stretch in the São João da Pesqueira municipality. The works, which represent a 10.8 million euro investment, included the construction of a reinforced concrete support wall in Casais do Douro. This required diverting both light and heavy vehicles to municipal roads and the EN 229.
According to IP, the project aims to improve mobility, reduce travel times, and enhance road safety through platform widening, intersection geometry improvements, track rectification, and upgraded signaling and safety equipment.
