ENACAL implements renewable energy and sanitation projects in Nicaragua

The Nicaraguan company ENACAL is implementing a renewable energy strategy to reduce operational costs and improve the sustainability of its water services. Executive President Ervin Barreda stated that the company is developing three photovoltaic plants: Solar 1 in Malpaisillo, Solar 2 in San Isidro, and a third plant in Nindirí. Once completed, these plants are projected to generate between 80% and 85% of the electricity required for the company’s pumping systems. Any excess energy generated can be integrated into the national grid.

In addition to energy initiatives, ENACAL is progressing with infrastructure improvements in Estelí. Sanitation works to expand and improve the sewage system in the Villa Esperanza, Oscar Turcios, and José Benito Escobar neighborhoods have reached 70% completion. The project involves replacing 220 meters of piping with larger diameter tubes to optimize wastewater collection, benefiting approximately 1,200 families. These works are expected to conclude by September 2026.
