Encomara’s Squid wind connection system reaches commercialisation

Aberdeen-based Encomara has announced that its Squid connection system for floating offshore wind has reached Technology Readiness Level 7/8. Following inshore trials at Ardersier Port in Scotland, the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has recognized the technology as ready for commercial manufacture at scale.

The Squid system serves as a universal mooring and power cable interface. It allows moorings and cables to be pre-installed before a floating turbine arrives at the site, enabling rapid connection and subsequent disconnection for maintenance or towing back to port. This design aims to reduce offshore construction risks and improve project reliability.

Supported by modeling studies from Scottish Enterprise and industry developers, the system is estimated to potentially reduce the levelized cost of energy (LCoE) for floating wind developments by up to 20 percent over their lifetime. The technology is developed by Encomara, an Aurora Energy Services business, and manufactured by Aurora Energy Services.
