Endangered species births reported at Whipsnade Zoo and Attica Zoological Park

Two rare red panda cubs were born at Whipsnade Zoo to a five-year-old female named Ruby and a six-year-old male named Nilo. Born on July 16, the cubs weighed approximately 90 grams each. They are currently being cared for by their mother in a nest box and will remain there until they are roughly three months old. Red pandas are classified as endangered, with fewer than 10,000 individuals estimated to remain in the wild due to habitat loss, fragmentation, and poaching.

In a separate conservation development, three Sumatran tiger cubs born at Attica Zoological Park in Greece have received their first vaccinations and identification microchips. These two-month-old cubs are part of a global effort to maintain a safety population for potential future reintroduction into the wild. Sumatran tigers are critically endangered, with fewer than 600 believed to exist in the wild. The species faces significant threats from habitat loss and illegal wildlife trade, including poaching for skins, bones, and teeth.
