Endocrine Society issues roadmap for obesity treatment and research

The Endocrine Society has released a new Scientific Statement emphasizing that obesity treatment should focus on overall health improvements rather than just weight loss. The statement highlights that effective treatment can reduce the risk of serious conditions, including heart disease, sleep apnea, and liver disease.

Obesity is characterized as a complex, chronic disease driven by biological, genetic, metabolic, and environmental factors. In the United States, the condition affects more than 40% of adults and incurs over $173 billion in annual medical costs. In Portugal, data indicates that over half of the adult population was overweight or obese as of 2022.

Lead author Daniel J. Drucker of Mount Sinai Hospital noted that while the rapid adoption of GLP-1 based therapies, such as semaglutide and tirzepatide, has transformed the treatment landscape, significant questions remain. Future research is needed to address long-term medication use, individualized treatment strategies, side effects, and optimal methods for measuring outcomes.
