Endometriosis diagnoses rise sharply in parts of Germany
An analysis by the health insurance provider IKK Südwest shows a significant increase in endometriosis diagnoses across the German states of Hessen, Saarland, and Rheinland-Pfalz between 2019 and 2025.
Overall, diagnoses for IKK Südwest members rose by approximately 45 percent. Specifically, Hessen saw a 51.1 percent increase, Saarland a 49.4 percent increase, and Rheinland-Pfalz a 39.7 percent increase. The most dramatic rise occurred among women aged 20 to 29, where diagnoses increased by 91 percent compared to 2019 levels.
Endometriosis is a chronic condition where tissue similar to the uterine lining grows outside the uterus, often causing severe pain. Jörg Loth, head of IKK Südwest, suggested the trend may indicate improved awareness and diagnostics, emphasizing that the condition should be addressed before patients endure prolonged suffering.
