Endometriosis linked to 46% higher type 2 diabetes risk

A study examining the health records of approximately 3 million women in the United States has found that women diagnosed with endometriosis face a 46 percent higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes compared to those without the condition.

Research indicates that this increased risk is particularly pronounced in women who are premenopausal and those who do not have obesity (a body mass index below 30 kg/m²).

Associate Professor Yağmur Minareci, a specialist in gynecology and gynecological oncology at Biruni University Faculty of Medicine Hospital, emphasized that endometriosis should not be viewed solely through the lens of menstrual pain and fertility issues. She noted that because the disease is accompanied by chronic inflammation, its relationship with metabolic health warrants a more holistic medical evaluation of patients' overall health.
