Endpoint protection coverage reaches 96% but quality remains a concern

Recent data indicates that while endpoint protection coverage is nearly universal, the quality of that protection varies significantly. An analysis of millions of endpoints across 30,000 organizations found that only 3.9% of endpoints are completely unprotected. However, 28% of endpoints rely on basic, signature-based antivirus software that lacks modern detection and response capabilities.

Currently, only 68.1% of endpoints utilize modern protection, such as full Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR) and next-generation antivirus (NGAV) tools designed to identify unusual behavior. While coverage is high, the reliance on outdated tools leaves a substantial portion of machines vulnerable to complex modern cyber attacks.

Effective EDR solutions typically consist of five key components: data collection and analytics, detection, visibility, response, and reporting. Because managing these tools can be complex and resource-intensive, many organizations are transitioning from unmanaged, self-managed EDR to managed EDR solutions to ensure continuous monitoring and rapid response to threats.
