Endurance Energy to deploy geothermal generator at undersea volcano

Seattle-based startup Endurance Energy is preparing to deploy a 100-kilowatt geothermal generator, named Adélie, to an undersea volcano off the coast of Oregon. This upcoming pilot demonstration, scheduled for September 7, marks the company’s fifth deployment on the ocean floor.

The technology aims to tap into hydrothermal fluids that can reach temperatures of 750 degrees Fahrenheit to produce electricity. While other geothermal companies focus on terrestrial sites, Endurance Energy is the first commercial venture to pursue undersea sources. CEO and founder Andrew Redd, a former SpaceX engineer, views the technology as a scalable solution to clean power needs, with the long-term goal of eventually electrifying entire cities.
