Italy to boost domestic oil and gas production

The Italian government has approved a decree aimed at boosting domestic oil and gas production to enhance national energy security and reduce reliance on imports. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that the measure will allow the state to appoint commissioners to assist regions in accelerating the issuance of permits and concessions for hydrocarbon research, exploration, and extraction.

In addition to fossil fuel production, Meloni highlighted Italy's progress in renewable energy, noting an increase of 28 gigawatts. The government has also allocated over 60 billion euros to protect citizens and businesses from rising energy costs and has extended fuel excise tax cuts to manage gasoline and diesel prices.

Separately, ENEA estimates that implementing energy efficiency policies and consumption containment measures could save approximately 1.2 billion standard cubic meters of gas for the upcoming winter, an amount sufficient to heat about one million homes. Meanwhile, Assocompara has proposed six measures to ARERA to improve consumer protection and transparency regarding energy bills, including clearer pricing information and standardized billing formats.
