Italy energy savings: Daylight saving time benefits

Expert analysis indicates that daylight saving time continues to provide economic and environmental benefits in Italy, despite a reduction in savings due to more efficient LED lighting technology.

For the seven-month period between March 29 and October 25, 2026, Terna estimates a reduction in electricity consumption of approximately 302 million kWh. This is equivalent to the average annual consumption of 115,000 families. The economic benefit to the national electricity system is valued at roughly 80 million euros, with an estimated reduction in emissions of 142,000 tons of CO2.

Long-term data from Terna shows that between 2004 and 2025, daylight saving time allowed for a total consumption reduction of over 12 billion kWh, resulting in a cumulative economic benefit estimated at approximately 2.3 billion euros.

Separately, the 15th ENEA Annual Report on Energy Efficiency highlights that between 2021 and 2025, Italy achieved energy savings of 5.08 Mtep through monitored efficiency measures. This represents 85% of the intermediate goal set by the National Integrated Energy and Climate Plan (PNIEC). Tax deduction mechanisms were a primary driver, accounting for about 52% of these savings.
