Eneco installs new solar roof at Blijdorp's Oceanium
Eneco has completed the installation of a new solar roof at the Oceanium in Diergaarde Blijdorp to mark the facility's 25th anniversary. The project involved replacing 22-year-old solar panels with over 2,000 new, high-efficiency panels.
Due to technological advancements, these new panels generate nearly twice as much energy as the original installation while using approximately 40 percent fewer panels. The electricity produced is used directly to power the climate control systems essential for the various plant and animal species housed within the Oceanium, such as cooling for penguins.
The old panels were collected by Stichting OPEN for recycling. This upgrade is part of an ongoing energy partnership between Blijdorp and Eneco, which also includes the use of wind energy from Rotterdam turbines and a heat-cold storage system.
