Enel and Atlas pause investments as Brazil power grid disputes linger

Italian utility Enel is close to finalising an agreement with Brazil's regulator over its São Paulo power‑supply contract, aiming to settle tariff and term disputes that affect the country's largest electricity distribution market. The talks, according to sources, could stabilise Enel's operations and set precedents for future private‑public contracts in Brazil's energy sector.

At the same time, Atlas Renewable Energy, owned by BlackRock’s Global Infrastructure Partners, has put about $1 billion of new renewable projects on hold after the national grid operator repeatedly curtailed solar and wind output. CEO Carlos Barrera said curtailments of up to 15‑25% forced the firm to delay construction and face higher costs for replacement power, highlighting a broader bottleneck for Brazil's renewable expansion.

Both developments underscore ongoing challenges in Brazil’s power market, where regulatory negotiations and grid capacity constraints are influencing the pace of investment in conventional and clean energy alike.
