Enel and Isagen lead major solar energy projects in Colombia
Colombia is expanding its solar energy capacity through several large-scale photovoltaic parks, driven by a need to diversify the national electricity matrix. According to data from the Mining and Energy Planning Unit (UPME), the ten largest solar projects currently in operation include Guayepo, Guayepo III, Parque Solar Puerta de Oro, Atlántico, Shangri-La, Latam Solar La Loma, Fundación, Parque Solar La Unión, Tepuy, and La Mata.
Enel and Isagen are leading the development of this infrastructure. Enel maintains a significant presence with projects such as Guayepo and Guayepo III. Isagen operates the Shangri-La project in Tolima and currently has nearly 800 megawatts of capacity in operation. Isagen aims to add approximately 1,000 megawatts of new capacity by the end of 2027, incorporating large-scale battery storage systems to manage electricity delivery during non-peak radiation hours.
Most of these projects are concentrated in the Caribbean region, which has become a strategic hub for renewable energy. Other notable players include Promigas, which acquired renewable energy assets from Zelestra in 2026. The shift toward solar energy is partly attributed to the increasing difficulties involved in developing hydroelectric, oil, and gas projects.
