Enel introduces new tools to combat phone and utility scams
Fraudsters are increasingly using the ‘missed call scam’ and caller ID spoofing to target individuals. In these schemes, scammers use fake international prefixes—such as those from Albania (355), Ivory Coast (225), Ghana (233), Nigeria (234), Chad (235), and the United Kingdom (0044)—to prompt victims to call back, resulting in significant unauthorized charges on their phone bills.
The energy sector is particularly vulnerable to these tactics. Scammers often impersonate utility companies through fake call centers to obtain sensitive personal or contractual data.
In response, Enel has introduced tools to help customers identify fraudulent activity. The company launched the ‘Verifica chi ti ha chiamato’ (Verify who called you) online platform, allowing users to check if a specific number is an official company contact. Additionally, Enel has simplified its official contact methods by launching a single, secure short number, 140, to replace previous customer service lines.
