Higher education admissions and exams update in Portugal and Brazil

Higher education institutions in Portugal and Brazil are reporting significant updates regarding student admissions and national examinations.

In Portugal, the second phase of the National Access to Higher Education (CNAES) 2026 has concluded. Approximately 9,116 students were placed, a slight increase from the previous year. However, 4,069 vacancies remain, primarily in polytechnic institutes and interior regions. While coastal cities like Lisbon and Porto show occupancy rates above 95%, interior institutions face higher vacancy rates, with 60% of all unfilled spots concentrated in these areas. Specific institutions like the Universidade Politécnica da Guarda reported an 85% growth in placements compared to 2025, while others like UTAD and UBI also saw significant student intake.

In Brazil, preparations for the 2026 Enem are underway. The exam is scheduled for November 8 and 15, with over 5 million registered participants. Information regarding exam locations will be released via the Inep confirmation card. Additionally, recent OECD data indicates a reduction in the Brazilian NEET rate (young people not in employment, education, or training) to 22.4% in 2024, linked to increased high school completion rates through social programs.
