Şener Üşümezsoy claims Princes' Islands Fault is inactive

Professor Şener Üşümezsoy has provided a geological assessment regarding the seismic activity in the Marmara Sea, specifically addressing the status of the Princes' Islands Fault. Üşümezsoy stated that the Princes' Islands Fault is “dead” and functions like a surface wall, similar to the Great Wall of China, and does not possess active movement.

He argued that recent tremors in the region should not be attributed to the Princes' Islands Fault, but rather to younger, secondary fault lines that intersect it. According to Üşümezsoy, a major earthquake is not expected on that specific fault, suggesting instead that seismic activity may occur in areas such as Düzce.
