Polish Grid Operator PSE Calls Power Market Activation Amid Heatwave
Polskie Sieci Elektroenergetyczne (PSE) announced a power‑market call for Thursday, 6 August, from 17:00 to 22:00. The activation, the third this summer after calls on 30 June and 4 August, was triggered by exceptionally high electricity demand during a heatwave, low hydro‑generation, reduced wind output and limited availability of conventional units. The mechanism obliges power‑plant operators and large industrial consumers participating in the reserve market to supply electricity and, if necessary, reduce consumption, but it does not affect individual household customers.
PSE explained that the reserve margin fell below the safety threshold of 1 100 MW, prompting the call. Prices on the electricity exchange rose sharply, reaching over 2 200 zł/MWh on 5 August and remaining high during the call period. Similar stress is reported in Southern Europe, with Hungary also facing reserve challenges. Imports are currently minimal, and the call aims to prevent potential shortages as solar generation declines in the evening hours.
The extended five‑hour call reflects growing concerns about the balance of the Polish power system under climate‑induced temperature extremes and highlights the increasing role of flexible resources such as energy storage and demand‑response measures.
