Energinet avoids one-year delay on Danish power grid project
A major power grid expansion project in Denmark, known as the Ringsbjerg project, narrowly avoided a one-year delay due to environmental and regulatory complexities. Energinet, the national transmission system operator, planned to install a new 400 kV high-voltage station and two 400 kV cable stretches in Zealand, Lolland, and Falster.
The project faced potential setbacks because protected bats living in trees and buildings on the site had to be relocated to new habitats. This relocation process is strictly limited to specific biological windows when the bats are not breeding or hibernating. Furthermore, the necessary environmental permits were contingent upon a national planning directive, creating a complex sequence of required approvals.
Authorities and Energinet have since reached a solution within existing regulatory frameworks to ensure the project proceeds without the projected year-long delay. The situation highlights the logistical challenges of accelerating power grid infrastructure development while adhering to strict environmental protections.
