Energinet to grant power grid connections to hundreds of companies
Energinet, the state-owned company responsible for Denmark's electricity grid, announced it is preparing to grant the first grid connection approvals to several hundred companies in November. This follows a pause on all approvals implemented in March.
There is currently a queue of over 300 projects awaiting connection. While Energinet noted that not all projects will receive approval in November, the company stated that the transmission grid has sufficient capacity to meet the electricity needs of households, small businesses, and critical societal functions such as healthcare and defense.
Projects are being prioritized into four categories based on a politically approved emergency plan:
Category 1: Protected needs and critical societal functions. Category 2: Direct electrification, renewable energy, carbon capture, hydrogen, and power-to-x. Category 3: Energy storage and grid-supporting projects. Category 4: Certain large energy consumers.
For categories 2 through 4, projects are also assessed based on 'grid-friendliness,' where those placing less strain on the network may receive better positioning in the queue. While large industrial projects may face delays, capacity remains available for heat pumps and electric vehicle chargers.
