Italy becomes Europe’s top LNG importer amid rising winter demand

In July, Italy overtook all other European nations to become the continent’s largest importer of liquefied natural gas (LNG). Traders took advantage of government incentives to continue buying LNG despite sharply higher prices, allowing Italy to fill its gas storage ahead of the winter season. The surge in imports contrasts with neighboring countries that have cut back on costly purchases, leaving their reserve levels below expectations.

Italy’s energy sector, the most gas‑dependent in Europe, benefited from strict national storage targets and penalties for non‑compliance. Snam’s chief executive, Agostino Scornajeni, said natural‑gas prices are likely to stay under pressure in the coming months, but the country’s aggressive stocking could become costly if supply normalises and prices fall.

The development raises questions about whether other European governments should financially support additional LNG purchases if Middle‑East supply disruptions persist.
