Energy and water infrastructure developments in Spain and Chile
In Spain, Antonio Miranda Bonet, the Director General of Energy and Mines for the Generalitat Valenciana, has called for increased rigor and higher quality in documentation submitted by energy companies. Speaking at the IV Energy Forum of the Valencian Community, Miranda emphasized that well-prepared projects are essential to avoid administrative delays and the need for repeated documentation cycles, which strain limited public resources. He advocated for a multi-technology approach to ensure system security, guided by territory availability, energy needs, and social acceptance.
In Chile, discussions regarding water infrastructure in the Atacama Region highlight the potential for significant expansion in desalination capacity. Currently, five plants produce 1,822 liters per second, but six additional environmentally approved projects could increase this to 7,573 liters per second. To avoid the high costs and territorial fragmentation seen in other regions, experts suggest the state should consider defined corridors for shared pipelines. This would allow mining, sanitation, and irrigation sectors to share infrastructure, potentially reducing the high costs currently associated with water transport and pumping.
