Turkmenistan explores gas export routes and offshore development
Turkmenistan is actively pursuing strategies to expand its energy footprint through new infrastructure and offshore exploration. At the Oil and Gas of Turkmenistan (OGT 2026) conference, Petronas Carigali Turkmenistan announced plans to accelerate the development of offshore Blocks 19 and 20. The company aims to begin drilling at least three exploration wells between December 2026 and mid-2027, with a goal of reaching first oil within four years of starting exploration.
Simultaneously, officials are discussing potential routes to transport Turkmen natural gas to European markets to enhance EU energy security. Discussions between the Turkmen Ambassador to Belgium and IOGP Europe focused on diversifying energy supplies and developing Caspian energy infrastructure.
Experts noted that meeting European Union environmental standards, particularly regarding methane intensity regulations set for 2030, will be critical for Turkmenistan to access the EU market. Reducing methane emissions during extraction is viewed as a necessary step to comply with upcoming EU monitoring and reporting requirements for imported fuel.
