Energy consumption and efficiency tips for Romanian households

Energy consumption in homes measuring 150 to 200 square meters can range from 4,000 to over 12,000 kWh annually, depending on heating methods and appliances. For instance, homes using gas heating typically consume less electricity than those utilizing heat pumps, electric boilers, or electric vehicle charging stations.

To optimize solar energy investments, the size of a photovoltaic system should match annual needs. A 5 kW system may suffice for consumption between 4,500 and 5,500 kWh, while 8 kW or 10 kW systems are better suited for higher demands. In Romania, a 10 kW system can generate between 11,000 and 14,000 kWh annually under favorable conditions, though production fluctuates seasonally.

Maintenance of existing appliances also significantly impacts costs. Dust accumulation behind refrigerators can increase electricity consumption by 20% to 30%, and in extreme cases, up to 50%. Additionally, adjusting window seals can prevent heat loss. When comparing heating sources for new builds, the cost difference between air-to-water heat pumps and gas boilers is currently estimated to be only a few dozen lei per month in favor of the heat pump.
