Energy costs emerge as major financial pressure for executives in 2026
According to the PwC CEO Survey Mid-Year Snapshot, rising energy costs are projected to be the largest financial surprise for global executives in 2026, surpassing other cost pressures. Approximately 19% of directors reported energy expenditure increases exceeding 10% due to global shocks.
In Romania, companies face significant concerns regarding prolonged or volatile energy prices. The country has experienced some of the highest electricity price increases in the European Union, compounded by higher VAT and excise taxes. Additionally, fuel costs rose by approximately 20% since the start of the year, influenced by conflicts in the Middle East.
Data from the National Institute of Statistics shows that energy production prices in June 2026 were 23.3% higher than in June 2025. The National Bank of Romania has warned that rising costs in energy-intensive and transport sectors are propagating through value chains, exerting upward pressure on prices and impacting external competitiveness.
