Energy costs rise due to fuel prices and subsidy shifts in Dominican Republic and Argentina

In the Dominican Republic, investments in electricity distribution companies are projected to decrease from US$296.5 million in 2019 to US$192.4 million by 2025. This shift is attributed to high fuel costs and a significant increase in allocations to the Electricity Billing Stabilization Fund (FETE). To prevent major spikes in residential and commercial bills, the state allocated over RD$36,000 million through July, with estimates suggesting the figure could reach RD$50,000 million by year-end.

In Argentina, families in Tierra del Fuego are facing substantial increases in gas tariffs. This is driven by successive government-authorized adjustments to distribution components, which have accumulated to nearly 29.7% in the first seven months of 2026. Additionally, changes to the Cold Zone regime have altered how discounts are applied. While a 50% discount remains, it is now calculated only on the price of gas, excluding transport and distribution components, which may lead to residential bill increases between 29% and 32%.
