Energy demand management scales in Spain and Paraguay

Demand response strategies are becoming critical for stabilizing electrical grids and integrating renewable energy. By modulating consumption during peak hours, users can provide strategic resources to the system in exchange for economic compensation.

In Spain, the Active Demand Response Service (SRAD) has been utilized twelve times since its launch in 2022. This voluntary mechanism allows large industrial consumers to reduce or postpone electricity use when Red Eléctrica predicts insufficient generation. These companies receive both fixed and variable remuneration for their availability. Total cumulative costs for this service have reached approximately 954 million euros.

In Paraguay, the multinational company Atome remains a key part of the National Electricity Administration (ANDE) demand projections through 2050. Despite regulatory uncertainties, Atome continues discussions regarding its green fertilizer project. The project involves a capital expenditure exceeding 665 million USD and is estimated to generate over 36 million USD annually for ANDE over its 25-year lifespan. Additionally, Atome has expressed interest in developing a 300 MWp solar photovoltaic plant in Villeta.
