Energy demand rises amid AI data center expansion and grid investments

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure is driving significant shifts in global energy demand and strategy. In New Brunswick, residents are expressing opposition to the construction of large-scale AI data centers. Local concerns center on massive electricity consumption, potential increases in utility bills, and environmental impacts. NB Power has received ten applications for such facilities, with a potential combined power requirement of 900 megawatts. Major proposed projects include a $2 billion investment by Beacon Data Centers and VoltaGrid, and a $2.7 billion project by Faster Than Light.

In response to increasing electrification and digital needs, PGE Group has announced an updated strategy through 2035 titled ‘Energy of the Digital Future.’ The company plans to invest approximately 210 billion PLN between 2025 and 2035, focusing heavily on power grids (70 billion PLN) and renewable energy and storage (80 billion PLN). The strategy aims to position the utility as a key participant in supporting new industrial sectors and digital infrastructure.
