North Macedonia launches 46 million euro hydroelectric modernization
North Macedonia has launched a 46 million euro project to modernize six major hydroelectric power plants: Vrutok, Vrben, Raven, Tikvesh, Spilje, and Globocica. The investment is funded by a 35 million euro loan from the German development bank KfW and a 10.7 million euro grant from the European Union through the Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF).
According to AD ESM, the modernization aims to replace aging equipment, reduce operational interruptions, and extend the lifespan of the units. The project is expected to increase installed capacity by 13.5 MW and generate an additional 50 GWh of clean electricity annually, potentially bringing in 5 million euros in extra revenue each year.
Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski stated that the project is a key step toward achieving a net-zero energy balance, noting that the country is already near 95 percent. Additionally, officials emphasized the need for a predictable regulatory framework and better institutional coordination to convert renewable energy interest into sustainable, real-world projects.
