Energy efficiency and ecological heating trends in France
As energy costs continue to impact French households, experts are providing guidance on optimizing heating to manage budgets and reduce environmental impact. Heating can account for up to 66% of a household's energy consumption. To mitigate rising electricity and gas bills, Ademe recommends maintaining temperatures around 19°C in living areas during the day and lowering them to 16–17°C at night. Reducing the temperature by just 1°C can decrease heating bills by an average of 7%.
Experts note that rather than turning heating off entirely, a moderate reduction is often more efficient. Maintaining a consistent temperature prevents the need for excessive energy use during morning reheating.
In addition to usage adjustments, there is a growing shift toward ecological heating solutions. Wood-based energy remains France's primary renewable energy source. Modern wood stoves and closed fireplaces, particularly those with the Flamme Verte label, offer high efficiency—often exceeding 85%—and significantly lower particulate emissions compared to traditional methods. The French government is also providing financial aid to encourage this transition toward sustainable heating technologies.
